Background: Non-technical skills are essential for the delivery of high quality, safe patient care. Failures in non-technical skills would contributed to the adverse events in healthcare. The purpose of this study was to explore the nursing students¡¯ non-technical skills in simulated emergency setting.
Methods: Thirty teams of a total 94 nursing students participated in either esophageal varix bleed or compartment syndrome scenario using human patient simulator (HPS). Data were collected from students¡¯ responses in scenario using a checklist for non-technical skills which comprised communication, teamwork, situation awareness, and decision making. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
Results: Failure in interpersonal communication skills has been identified. More than half the team was lacking in teamwork. In terms of situation awareness and decision-making, even though students learned in theory classes, it is difficult to apply to the simulated clinical situations.
Conclusion: The simulation training could be an effective learning strategy to identify and develop the non-technical skills of nursing students for patient safety.
